"This is Suzee- She is Sober"

This was the phrase that stuck in my head after a recent weekend away.

It was a weekend away with friends I hadnt seen since BC (before COVID).

I had not prepared myself for this phrase. As a person who has been sober for nearly 3 years- Sobriety really WASN'T on my radar at all. Its no longer " a thing" for me. No big deal.

Or at least it wasnt until the moment that I was introduced to every new person I met as-

"This is Suzee- She is sober" (sighing tone with eye rolling)

Like seriously?

Or - as wine was being poured- "none for

Suzee- shes doesnt drink"

Ouch!

But why was this bothering me so much?

I had to dig deep to get to the bottom of why these statements had caused such a viceral reaction in me.

My answer---? Hell i felt judged. Not for being drunk or for being a high functioning drinker but for being sober!

In the past I was introduced as "Boozey Suzeey" - was being introduced as " Sober Suzee" just as bad?

Strangely I felt kind of ostracised. I felt for the first time since early sobriety like I didnt belong.

Then I remembered. This is one of the topics we discuss in my Shes Sober AF course.

Drinkers struggle to be around non drinkers (at times). Because when you declare yourself sober- drinkers of alcohol may feel immediately judged. As if you have taken moral high ground.

Lets remember that alcohol is an addictive drug and as such drinkers need reassurance that drinking is OK- this is rooted way in the sub- conscious programming.
